Near Fairmont Park there are quite a few cemeteries, the largest of which is Laurel Hill. It extends for quite a ways along side the Schuylkill River but there is also Mount Peace, but Mt Vernon is the second largest.
But it is overgrown and in poor condition. I saw it from Laurel Hill and the horrible condition of the entrance. The building at the entrance has been in disrepair for many years by the look of it.
Entrance off of Ridge and Lehigh.
This is only part of Mt Vernon apparently. The other part is open and accessible and that is where I parked. I will leave out the details of how I got into the cemetery.
From over the fence from Mt Peace.
Once inside the cemetery there was no sign of human activity. No tracks, nothing cleared, no that is not true. One small area had been cleared fairly recently. A headstone dated from 1994, the area around it, while not cleared, had been cut back probably last summer or fall. It is the most recent head stone I saw.
Another thing that I am a little confused by is the condition of the pavement and drives.
Here is a screen grab from google maps. It is dated as 2015.
It has been a long time since this place was taken care of. The pavement of the drives is broken and nearly fully covered by vegetation. This does not happen over night or a few years.
I will be heading back in the future, at an undisclosed time, to get some video and more photos. It will be in daylight, and it will be early in the morning. I am not specifically afraid of ghosts, zombies or ghouls. I do have an over active imagination which can cause all sorts of problems, like being afraid of the dark! I am more concerned with bumping into a crackhead or junkie than anything else.
More to come.
